Al-Jouf includes two governorates:
Al-Qurayat:
Being situated on the international road linking Saudi Arabia to the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan, Al-Qurayat is one of the governorates that enjoy a strategic location.
It includes seven (7) centres (three of them A category & four, B category) besides Al-Hodaithah land port (25 km) from Al-Qurayat, which is the largest land port in the Middle East. Nomads and urban population inhabit Al-Qurayat.
Al-Qurayat means villages (plural of village), including Kaff, Athra, Manwa, Ein-al-Hawas etc.
Al-Qurayat was famous for the production of salt and that was why it had been named Qurayat Al-Melh (Salt villages). Today Al-Qurayat is famous for olives; the olive oil produced in Al-Qurayat is one of the finest oils in Saudi Arabia.
Dumat al-Jandal:
Domat Al-Jandal is located southwest of the city of Skaka on rocks belong to the Arabian Shield, one of the most important geological areas in Saudi Arabia, forty kilometres from Skaka.
It includes seven (7) centres (three of them A category, and four, B category).
Domat al-Jandal was named after a fortress built by Domaa bin Ismael; and al-Jandal means the stones; thus, the name refers to the fort, which Domaa built in a location of full of stones, according to Al-Hamawy in his "Glossary of Countries".
The remaining sixteen centres (four of them A category & twelve, B category) belong to Skaka, the capital of the region.
